Goals for 2016

Posted: January 1, 2016 in Uncategorized

Happy New Years, and I hope everyone had fun last night. With the start of the new year comes the dreaded expectations that come with a new year. New hopes for each year to either lose the holiday weight or finally join a gym, maybe go back to school to get a better job, get a better job… You know what I am talking about, the blasted New Years Resolutions. I won’t rant about how pointless they are, but for those who do make them and actually follow through good for you, keep it up. Today’s Weekly Writing Wrap-up is going to consist of my writing goals for 2016.

If you haven’t read my review of 2015 you can read it Here! While I didn’t complete all of my goals this past year, the fact I accomplished any of them is a mazing. Even that I had a great writing year. This year is going to be even better. Here are my quickly list of my writing goals, note more could be added as the year goes on:

  • Finish first draft of Seeing Through the Veil
  • Read
  • Write more words per day
  • Edit writing
  • More content for writing blog
  • Twitter
  • Develop 3-4 of my other writing projects
  • Write 2-3 Novels
  • More content for my Review Blog
  • Write and shoot some short films.

That is a lot of goals, so let’s dive into them a little more.

Starting from the top, this goal should be obvious as I have been writing this since the end of August. The deadline for the first draft to be done is February 16, 2016, and I will complete the novel by then. I’m having some struggles capturing Natalie’s character but I am not surprised on that. Kiana is more in line with my own personality but Natalie has some of my more extreme parts. I am sure I will get a better handle on her by the end of the book. I only have just over 20k words left to the 170k word count goal for the draft. I am sure this is going to be a lot longer by the time I am done. Probably about 200K, this draft is already the longest draft I have ever wrote. I will continue to cover this in my weekly writing wrap ups.

What goes along with this finishing the first draft of Seeing Through is editing my writing. I am going to cover that one here next. I need to get use to editing my writing and while I don’t have all day to write. Well, I do, but I need to be using that time to find full time work. Anyway, I will start doing this roughly around April as that is when I am going to pick up the book to really break down what is working and what isn’t. Trust me, I already have some ideas for this and I am keeping track of them. I know I will find more when I go back to read it and take new notes.

Next is read. I need to get back to reading more, as I am haven’t been doing that all that much. When I pick up a good novel it takes months to finish as I read for a few nights and then months go by before I read again. I do listen to a lot of audiobooks, but usually when I am working on art. My focus isn’t the story and how it is being explored. Stephen King has a great quote about this:

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

Thankfully I have bunch of books I want to read sitting on my bookshelves just waiting to be picked up. I have already started this one this week and I know I am going to have to really force myself to keep reading before bed.

I need to get this blog under wraps, as I have started things and not followed through. One being on the authors writing styles for outlining and plotting, other is my review section on books on writing. Not to mention my project section called the Cluster. Where I get updates on all the projects I am working on. Spoiler, they are all out of date. So, in 2016 I am going to start putting so more time into this blog. Two posts a week is a lot, but I need follow through. Besides all that, I want to start posting other things like articles from other authors blogs that I find interesting. That isn’t that much extra as it will be just and quick post and link to the article. That will happen, the overall goal is to have this blog how I want it by the end of 2016. I am going to add twitter here as it is part of marketing, I need to tweet more then just about my latest blog posts. I will be retweeting other authors tweets and articles I found.  If you would like to follow me on twitter you can do so Here!

The next two and one I passed over I will cover together. They are develop 3-4 Writing projects and write 2-3 novels. Yes, this is very ambitious for me since it has been about four months to write the current novel I am writing now. I need to start writing more words in a day. After spending most of November writing two novels, I know I can do this. In the past I have done 2-3k words a day. Now I barely make a 1000. I will need to do this if I want to write a few novels this year. To do that, I need to develop other series as well. To do this I need to get off my ass and stop letting the lack of creativity from stopping me. If one thing I learned from 2015, is when ideas comes to me and they don’t seem to be what I was hoping for, instead of giving up on the creative process and letting more time past before working on them. I need to stick with it. That is what happened with Seeing Through series, several elements came in that I didn’t like that much but i stuck with the development and I love them now. It is so obvious that they are apart of the world and story.

One thing is, I don’t have to completely develop everything as if I develop 3-4 series it will be a year or two before I get to them. By then some new ideas will come that I need to fit in. However, I can’t completely let new ideas or time to change what I put into before. I am going to have to work out a process or rules of how I will go about developing different series. Right now I have been working under the impression of I develop the next series I will write a book in. Yes, I want to write books in different series instead of just one. Seeing Through the Veil is the top priority to complete, but that is editing.

I say this last year, and I am going to say this again. I need to add more content to my Review blog, which you can visit Here! In the past I have written new series pilot episode reviews and a few movies reviews that’s it. Nothing consistent, and that needs to change. I am going to pick some series and start reviewing the series. I think the first series will be CW’s Legends of Tomorrow mini series that is part of the Arrow and Flash series. Also, since I haven’t watch Super Girl yet, I may do that one as well. As I read more, I will also be adding book reviews to this site. My goal is a review a week, but that is a lot to start with. We will see. You can bet I will be review Daredevil season 2 when it drops on Netflix’s this year.

Like the more content for the review blog, my last goal was posted last year as well. I need to write some short films and film them. I just have to. I do enjoy it and I bought a great camera that just isn’t being used. Also, now that my good friend is done with college he will have more time to help out. Especially, since he wants to do some short films. This is going to happen, though I have no official goal of how many shorts to write or to film. The goal is just to do it.

There you have it. My goals for 2016, and they are lofty ones. A lot I want to do, but I know I can achieve them, I just need to kick myself into gear. What are you goals for 2016? Are you going to finally write that novel you always wanted or write your tenth novel? Whatever your goals are, I wish you the best in the new year.
